About SOTA Benefits

We got tired of waiting for the industry to change.
So we changed it.

SOTA Benefits was founded in 2024 by two people with more than fifty combined years inside health insurance, who decided the only way to fix it was to build it differently from the ground up.

Our story

We spent our careers on every side of this business: agencies, carriers, consulting, administration and compliance. We saw what worked. Mostly, we saw what didn't.

TPAs that wouldn't change. Carriers stuck in the way it's always been done. “Solutions” that moved cost onto employees and called it savings. And through all of it, nobody was truly taking care of the member, the person on the other end of the claim.

We knew what a better plan looked like. We just couldn't build it inside someone else's system. So in 2024 we stopped asking for permission.

We started SOTA Benefits, bought a TPA, and built our own in-office service team. Now plan design, claims administration and member service answer to the same standard: bring value back to health insurance.

We couldn't fix the system from the outside. So we built a new one.
Before 2024

Inside the system

Decades across agencies, carriers, consulting and administration, watching good ideas die in old machinery.

April 2024

SOTA Benefits founded

A plan architecture firm built around one standard: Value = (Quality + Service) ÷ Cost.

Then

Bought a TPA

Claims administration with roots back to 1996, now built to run our plans the way they're designed.

Then

Built the service team

Our own in-office, bilingual call center with licensed enrollment, so members reach real people who own the problem.

Today

Changing the narrative

Design, risk, administration and service under one roof, for employers, members and the brokers who serve them.

Founders

The people who decided to stop waiting.

Co-CEO & Founding Partner

Scott W. Long

Scott holds a degree in Insurance & Risk Management and has spent nearly 30 years across sales, administration and compliance, learning exactly where health plan dollars leak out. He is also Managing Partner of Cornerstone Preferred Resources, SOTA's Houston-based claims-paying TPA.

At SOTA he leads the side of the value equation most plans neglect: the administration, compliance and service that turn a good design into real results. Former Houston Health Underwriter of the Year, former President of NABIP-Texas, and a long-time advocate for the broker community.

Co-CEO & Founding Partner

Cas Sharp

Cas brings a degree in Mathematics to a simple formula: Value = (Quality + Service) ÷ Cost. In insurance and employee benefits since 2000, he has worked on every side of the market, from agencies and carriers to consulting, third-party administration and self-funded plan strategy, and has spent much of that time designing plans built to challenge the traditional model.

Today he leads SOTA's plan design, distribution and partnerships, building plans where the math works for both the employer and the employee. He is also a partner at Cornerstone Preferred Resources. Known around SOTA as the “Plan Professor.”

What we believe

Our building code.

Every plan, fee and decision has to pass these twelve standards. They're how we design plans, how we talk to clients, and how we treat each other on an ordinary Tuesday.

Love

Care enough to do the hard thing.

We put people before transactions, and make the decision that's best for the member and employer, even when the easier path would benefit us.

Humility

Never assume we have all the answers.

No carrier, vendor, consultant or strategy has a monopoly on good ideas, including us. We listen first and stay willing to change.

Ownership

Fix the problem, not the blame.

Mistakes happen in a business this complicated. We own them, correct them and spend our energy making things right.

Integrity

The numbers should survive the questions.

Employers deserve to know what they pay, where it goes, who gets paid and why. If it can't withstand scrutiny, it doesn't belong in the plan.

Generosity

Give more value than you take.

We share our knowledge, data and relationships freely, because a better healthcare decision creates value whether or not it creates revenue for us today.

Faithfulness

Be there when it actually matters.

We measure ourselves by the difficult claim, the frustrated member call and the problem no one else wants to own.

Kindness

Never forget there's a person behind the claim.

Every claim is a person, a family and often a hard moment. Service starts with patience, compassion and action.

Clarity

Replace confusion with clarity.

Complexity creates anxiety. Clarity creates confidence. Our job is to simplify the complicated and give people a clear path forward.

Courage

Challenge what doesn't make sense.

Familiar doesn't always mean right. We question prices, incentives, contracts and industry habits when the evidence says there's a better way.

Hope

Believe healthcare can be better.

Rising costs aren't inevitable. Thoughtful design, better information and accountable execution produce a better experience and a better result.

Respect

Everyone's role matters.

Members, employers, providers, vendors, brokers and teammates all deserve dignity. We can negotiate hard without diminishing the person across the table.

Justice

Stand up for a fair exchange of value.

Employers and members shouldn't have to navigate economics they can't see. The dollars spent should bear a reasonable relationship to the value received.

Value is not something we sell. It's the standard we judge everything by.

These beliefs are rooted in the faith our founders share. You won't hear it in a sales pitch. You'll see it in how we handle the hard claim.

VALUE = (QUALITY + SERVICE) ÷ COST
